Who is Lord Muruga?
Muruga is ALL and ALL is Muruga.
Lord Muruga — also known as Karthikeya, Subrahmanya, Shanmuga, Skanda, Kantha, Guha and by thousands of other sacred names — is known, alongside Lord Ganesha, as the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Uma Parvati or the union of the Shiva-Shakti principle. Regarded as Shiva Himself, He reveals Himself from within Lord Shiva and restores cosmic order and dharma by the destruction and transformation of the asura - Surapadman
While His learned devotees understand Him to be the supreme absolute God, infinitely permeating all that is existent and non-existent, He manifest in infinite ways in all His glory to bestow His Divine Grace. In Tamil Nadu and the Tamil diaspora world-wide, Lord Muruga holds a uniquely exalted place as "Thamizh Kadavul" — the God of Tamil — the patron deity of the Tamil people, language, and culture.
His most recognizable symbol is the Vel — a divine, luminous spear gifted to him by his mother Parvati and infused with Her Shakthi (Energy). Worshipped as Lord Muruga Himself, the Vel represents Jnana Shakti, the power of transcendental knowledge that pierces through all illusions and grants liberation. His mount is the Peacock , and His banner is the Rooster . Together with the Vel, they symbolize the crushing of the ego, the release from the bonds of Anavam, Karma and Maya and herald of the dawn of wisdom on the path of liberation - Mukthi.
Lord Muruga is worshipped across India and throughout the world, and his six principal abodes — the Arupadai Veedu — namely Thiruparankundram, Thiruchendhur, Pazhani, Swamimalai, Thiruththani and Pazhamndhircholai, are among the most sacred pilgrimage sites in South India.
What is Kaumaram?
Kaumaram (கௌமாரம்) is one of the six major schools of Sanathana Dharma (Hinduism as is it is generally referred to). Kaumaram is a tradition of devotion, philosophy, and practice centred entirely on Lord Muruga (Kumara). Alongside Shaivam, Vaishnavism, Shaktam, Ganapathyam, and Sauram, Kaumaram forms part of the ancient Shanmatha tradition or Aru Samayangal as referred to by Arunagirinathar Swamigal. Uniquely, Kaumaram celebrates all other 5 within itself.
For the Kaumara devotee, Lord Muruga is not merely one deity among many — he is the Parabrahman, the Supreme Absolute, the source and goal of all existence. The Vel he carries is the primordial Shakti, the universe-creating and universe-dissolving power of consciousness itself.
Historically, Kaumaram was practised predominantly in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, and wherever Tamil culture had taken root, however, in recent decades it has become celebrated amongst all seekers of liberation, transcending the limitations of language, nationality etc.
Some of its hallmarks include:
- Devotion to Lord Muruga as the Supreme Reality.
- Worship at the Arupadai Veedu (Six Sacred Abodes), and all other sacred abodes of Lord Muruga worldwide.
- Kavadi — the ritual bearing of a decorated arch as an act of surrender and devotion to earn the Grace of Lord Muruga.
- Recitation and singing of Thiruppugazh and other works of Arunagirinathar Swamigal as well as the sacred works of all other saints and sages blessed by Lord Muruga to light the path of liberation (Mukthi).
- The spiritual ideal of attaining the Grace of God that allows one to transcend all negativity and hindrances in life through devotion (Bhakti) while enjoying the blessings of the 4 Purusharthas of Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha
Who is Arunagirinathar?
Saint Arunagirinathar (அருணகிரிநாதர்) — also revered as Arunagirinathar Swamigal — was a 15th-century Tamil saint-poet who became one of the greatest devotees of Lord Muruga the world has ever known. He was born in Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, at the foot of the sacred, liberation bestowing Arunachala Mountain.
Through his work, it can be seen that his youthful years may have been filled with intense indulgence and dissipation in worldly desires. Reduced to absolute destitution and unable to re-connect with the divine, he climbed the Gopuram of the Thiruvannamalai temple in despair, intending to end his life. In that moment of total surrender, the ever-compassionate Lord Muruga intervened to save his life. Appearing before him, Lord Muruga initiated him with the divine ubadhesam “Summa Iru Sol Ara”, touched his tongue with the sacred Vel, filled him with divine wisdom, transformed him utterly.
From that instant of grace, Arunagirinathar's mouth became a fountain of absolute truth and devotional poetry overflowing with spiritual potency. By the instructions of Lord Muruga, he wandered the sacred sites of Tamil Nadu, composing and singing his verses at each temple he visited.
He is celebrated not only for the extraordinary spiritual depth of his compositions but also for the staggering complexity of their rhythmic metre and musicality. He composed in a unique poetic style called Chandam, characterised by intricate, fascinating rhythmic patterns unlike anything else. When the works of Arungirinathar Swamigal are read, recited, sung, listened to, or simply revered, the Grace of Lord Muruga brings forth a transformation that is beyond human comprehension. Every line becomes a vehicle for divine experience.
சும்மா இரு, சொல் அற
Be still. Transcend all words.
— Kandhar Anubhudhi, Verse 12
This single line — Summa Iru Sol Ara — is considered by many to be the essence of his entire teaching that leads the soul to Mukthi.
What is Thiruppugazh?
Thiruppugazh (திருப்புகழ் — "Sacred Glory") is the grand and prolific work of Arunagirinathar Swamigal that was ordained by Lord Muruga. It is considered as the essence of Vedic wisdom by the scholars and devotees and is known to attract the Divine Grace of Lord Muruga, providing liberation to the soul, together with a life filled with righteousness, abundance, fulfilment and bliss. It is a vast collection of over 16,000 devotional verses — though only around an estimated 1,300 + songs have been recovered and used today — composed at sacred shrines across Tamil Nadu and parts of Sri Lanka.
Each Thiruppugazh is a unique composition addressed to Lord Muruga – some offering a multitude of specific benefits while others describing and glorifying Lord Muruga in extraordinary and majestic ways. The devotees attest that even just the word Thiruppugazh attracts the Grace of Lord Muruga.
While some songs address the Lord in His specific abode (Thiruthalam) categorised as Alaya Varisai, others are categorised as Pothu Thiruppugazh or common Thiruppugazh where the location may not be specified. Each song is set to a unique metre and musical structure known as Chandam. This, together with its spiritual potency makes Thiruppugazh one of the most musically diverse and spiritually beneficial bodies of devotional literature ever created.
Thiruppugazh is not merely recited or read — it is sung. The rhythmic complexity of the Chandam metre makes each verse come alive in song, and traditional teachers pass these songs to students through an oral tradition that has continued unbroken for six centuries.
Thiruppugazh can be read, recited, sung or listened to and is available to all.

Benefits of Thiruppugazh
Across six centuries, devotees have experienced transformation through this practice — not merely as music, but as a living spiritual discipline.
Purification of the Mind
The complex rhythms and devotional intent of Thiruppugazh demand full concentration, naturally quieting the restless mind and cultivating one-pointed focus.

Grace and Protection
Tradition holds that Lord Muruga's protective grace envelops those who sincerely chant his praise, guiding them through the obstacles of worldly life.
Mastery of Tamil
Thiruppugazh contains some of the most intricate Tamil prosody ever composed. Regular study deepens appreciation of the Tamil language at its highest.
A Path to Mukthi
Ultimately, Thiruppugazh is not mere music — it is a direct path to liberation. Summa Iru Sol Ara: "Be Still, transcend all words" — this is its final teaching.
